The GUBI Nagasaki dining chair was designed in 1954 and remains Mathieu Matégot’s best-known work. The dining chair is made from perforated sheet metal, Rigitulle, which is characteristic of Matégot’s work, and has distinctive details such as the small stirrup that holds the seat and legs together. Both the backrest and seat are curved and vaulted like a saddle, and the overall impression is one of lightness. The model was first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in 1954 and is, together with Arne Jacobsen’s Ant Chair (1952), one of the few three-legged models. Its highly graphic design recalls Le Corbusier’s work for the church at Ronchamp. Today, the dining chair is part of the permanent collection of the internationally renowned, privately owned Vitra Design Museum. The colour is Soft Black Semi Matt.
